About Us

For four generations, the Spitaleri name has brought one thing to mind - GREAT FURNITURE!

The owner, Anthony J. "Skeeter" Spitaleri III proudly talks about how his grandfather, Anthony J. Spitaleri Sr., began the business in South River after coming from the Sicilian village of Campo Fiorito in the province of Palermo. He built the store in 1905 with two floors covering only about half a block and sold not only furniture but also appliances. Spitaleri Furniture is a four story building filling a city block where over 3,000 pieces of furniture are on display in room settings. The entire building is owned by the family so overhead is minimized and the savings passed along to customers. And along with the building, the family's experience has grown.

108 years of experience have funneled to the fourth generation that includes Skeeter's adult children Anthony IV, Jennifer and Justina. They are involved in all aspects of the business and are always making sure that customers are getting the best service and the right furniture for their home. “My father was here when he was 15 and I started working here when I was 14. My children started working here when they were about 17. You more or less eat, drink, and sleep furniture.,” says Skeeter.

The full-service store offers upholstery, tables, wall units, entertainment centers, kitchen sets, bedrooms, bedding, dining rooms, living rooms, recliners and accessories including lamps and artwork. Styles range from country to contemporary, western to eclectic. Customers will find various types of wood throughout the store, including cherry, oak, pine, birch, and ash. "But people do not have to settle for what they see," says Skeeter. "Everything is available in a variety of options. It's always the customers' choice of fabrics, finishes and colors.” The store is well designed with furniture set up and displayed almost as if it’s in your own home to give an idea of what a complete living room, dining room or bedroom will look like.

Kitchen Remodel Process

The '90s were good to Spitaleri Furniture, despite more competition from department stores as well as regional retailers. These larger, impersonal stores could not match the personal touch and exquisite service available from Spitaleri Furniture. There have been times when Spitaleri had the opportunity to move to a highway location, but "that would mean more overhead, more expenses, more headaches. We are in an older, more settled location but that means people are going to be able to save money while getting the best furniture and service around. We don't want to lose that,” says Skeeter. The personal touch includes transporting customers to the store, who may be in their silver years or otherwise unable to get to the store. Delivery is handled by Spitaleri Furniture's own employees on Spitaleri's trucks, and includes free removal of the old furniture and bedding.

While Spitaleri has a website, users cannot order products online. They will see the furniture he sells, but Skeeter feels that furniture has to be experienced. "You have to feel the wood, the fabric, and sit in it to make sure it is the right piece for you and your home." While most customers come from Middlesex, Monmouth and Somerset counties, his reputation brings in people from around the state. Skeeter adds, "We get grandmas who come back with their grandchildren to shop for furniture.” Beyond the family, Spitaleri Furniture employees are also experienced. "We have employees that have been with us for 20 years and more. When people come in to us, they are benefiting from decades of experience."
